Peruvian Mining and Geology

SUMMARY

The Mining Engineering Section of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) offers this course as part of its internationalization activities in order to provide English-speaking students introductory knowledge about major geological features and main metallic ore deposits of the central and northern part of Peru. Education in Mining Engineering is offered at the PUCP for over 40 years. The academic experience gained during these years, is the basis for the launch of this first version of the Winter School “Peruvian Mining and Geology” that includes both thematic and cultural activities.

The mining history of our country will also be emphasized as well as cultural activities that reflect the pre-Columbian, colonial and republican history of Peru. This 13 days course is addressed to advanced mining engineering students of universities that have signed academic cooperation agreements with our section which has been especially active in international student exchange programs

PROFESSORS OF THE COURSE

Silvia Rosas is Professor and Head of the Mining and Geology Programs at the Department of Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Silvia obtained her PhD in Natural Sciences at Heidelberg University, Germany. She is Geologist and trained in mineralogy and petrology with especial focus in Sedimentology of Carbonate Rocks having an extensive knowledge in the geology of the central Peruvian Andes. Since her PhD studies­ Silvia has concentrated her research in the Triassic-Jurassic carbonate rocks of the central Peruvian Andes, which are the host rock of important ore deposits, identifying special rock features related to ore forming. Furthermore she has experience in geological processes in arid regions related to archaeological sites like that of the UNESCO world heritage Nazca Lines.

Jean Vallance is an independent petrographic and field consultant. He obtained his PhD at Nancy (France) with a thesis in metallogeny and geochemistry at CREGU “The palaeofluids at the end of the Variscan orogeny: P-T-X evolution and metallogenic implications. A multidisciplinary study of Western European gold districts”. He did a post-doc at CREGU (Nancy, France), supported by Areva NC studying the genesis of the Imouraren sandstone hosted U deposit (Niger) and a second post-doc at the Geneva University (Switzerland) studying the genesis of the Nambija oxidized gold skarn deposit (Ecuador). He has been Chief exploration geologist at Morococha mine Pan American Silver Peru SAC and Exploration senior geologist for Minsur SA working as Chief exploration geologist at San Rafael mine. Jean has written a number of scientific papers (Mineralium Deposita, Economic Geology, Chemical Geology, Tectonophysiscs).
